Hypos are experienced by children with Type 1 Diabetes when their blood glucose levels drop below 4 mmol. Symptoms of Hypos can include, cold sweats, a feeling of Dizziness, loss of balance, slurred speech, a tickle in their tummy, a pale pallor and feeling hungry amongst others. Symptoms can vary from child to child and some children will have no awareness of Hypos at all. In extreme cases or if a mild hypo is not treated quickly the child may suffer from a Seizure or even fall into a Diabetic Coma. All Hypos need to be treated with fast acting glucose immediately.
All children with Type 1 Diabetes will experience Hypos, if they become to often it’s a good idea to speak to one of your team, I have heard it said that a child with very good control is likely to have around 3 Hypos per week. Whilst experiencing a Hypo a child should be kept still and should never be left alone.
